Estate Jewelry in San Francisco: What is it? Where to find it?

by 66mint Fine Estate Jewelry September 27, 2016

There are many common misconceptions about what estate jewelry IS exactly. Some people think estate jewelry is synonymous with vintage jewelry. Not true. Vintage jewelry has to have an age to it. Arguably, vintage jewelry should be a minimum of 20 to 50 years old. Others equate estate jewelry to antique jewelry. Again, not correct. For a piece to be considered antique jewelry it should be at least 100 years old. So what is "estate jewelry"? The answer is very simple:

Estate jewelry in San Francisco, or anywhere for that matter, is jewelry that has been previously owned. A piece of jewelry that has been passed down from one family member to another would be considered estate jewelry. A piece of jewelry that has been traded amongst collectors would be considered estate jewelry. Even a piece that one store purchased as part of a closeout from another store could in fact be considered estate jewelry. The only real defining factor is if the piece is being sold by someone other than the original owner. A good rule of thumb is to equate estate jewelry with second hand jewelry...estate jewelry just sounds more glamorous!

Now, can a piece of estate jewelry also be a piece of antique jewelry? Absolutely! Most antique jewelry is estate jewelry, as there are very few original owners of pieces who live to be 100+ years old. Along those lines, most vintage jewelry (pieces 20-50 years old) are also often estate. But just because a piece is marketed as estate jewelry does not automatically qualify it as antique jewelry or vintage jewelry.

So, now that you have a basic understanding of what is estate jewelry, the next question you have to ask yourself is where to buy estate jewelry in San Francisco (or anywhere throughout the world, for that matter!).
